Donald Trump’s refusal to accept his election defeat from Joe Biden has led to potentially dangerous rhetoric, especially stirring conflict in the battleground state of Georgia. An election official of the state has since spoken out, blasting Trump for his dangerous attempt to cast doubt on the elections.
Republican election official Gabriel Sterling held a press conference this week, blasting Trump and his allies for pushing the dangerous rhetoric that surrounded his contention of the results. Trump has been mostly unsuccessful in his pursuit to contest the results, which he continues to push to this day without providing evidence of fraud. Sterling noted that Georgia’s election officials have now begun receiving threats from Trump supporters, including the wife of Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. Sterling also blasted the GOP Senators for being complicit in Trump’s desperate attempts to overturn the election.
“Mr. President, it looks like you likely lost the state of Georgia. We’re investigating, there’s always a possibility, I get it, you have the right to go through the courts,” said Sterling, who oversaw the implementation of the voting system. “What you don’t have the ability to do — and you need to step up and say this — is stop inspiring people to commit potential acts of violence. Someone is going to get hurt. Someone is going to get shot. Someone is going to get killed and it’s not right.”
Georgia has already certified the results that formalize Biden’s victory over Trump. The results see Biden gaining 306 electoral college votes while Trump has 232. Trump previously attacked Sterling and called him an “enemy of the people,” which the official says has triggered the conflict between Trump and the officials.
Although Trump may have lost reelection to Biden this year, the outgoing president has hinted he may try and run again in 2024. At the White House reception this week, Trump floated the idea that he may run for reelection after Biden’s term. The outgoing president appeared to have acknowledged to his fellow Republicans that he has lost the election even as he continues to pursue contention of the results in the battleground states that were in favor of the former vice president.
